Schmidt Ocean Institute, based in Palo Alto, California, supports research and exploration aimed at expanding knowledge of the world's oceans. It pursues this goal by facilitating technological advancements, data-rich observation, and open sharing of information. The institute is anchored in the belief that continued technological progress will enhance humanity's ability to understand nature, with a particular emphasis on the oceans, which are both endangered and poorly understood. It operates within the maritime research and exploration sector, working with partners to advance ocean observing and data collection at sea. Its activities address broad ocean science objectives and emphasize transparent information exchange to benefit researchers and other stakeholders. A notable recent development is a 2024 partnership with The Nippon Foundation to support the Nekton Ocean Census program.
