Based in Ottawa, Ontario, Native Women’s Association of Canada (NWAC) is a national Indigenous nonprofit that represents the political voice of Indigenous women, girls, and gender-diverse people across Canada. Its membership spans First Nations communities on and off reserve, those with various status designations, as well as Métis and Inuit, forming a federation of Indigenous women’s organizations working to improve social, economic, cultural and political well-being in their communities and in Canadian society. Founded in 1974, NWAC has developed governance structures, decision-making processes, and financial policies designed to support its mission and operations. NWAC conducts national and international advocacy to influence legislation and policy reforms that promote equality for Indigenous women, girls, Two-Spirit and gender-diverse people, including LGBTQ+ individuals. Its work covers a range of issues—from employment and labour to health, violence prevention and safety, justice and human rights, environment, early learning and childcare, and international affairs—along with efforts to preserve Indigenous culture and support the well-being of families and communities, framed by a collective governance ethos described as akin to a Grandmother’s Lodge.
