The Municipal Building Commission (MBC) has served as the steward for the historic Minneapolis City Hall and Hennepin County Courthouse (also referred to as the Municipal Building) since 1904. The MBC was created by Minnesota Statutes as an independent board for the exclusive care of the building.

The Commission is comprised of four members: the chair of the Board of County Commissioners of Hennepin County, the mayor of the city of Minneapolis, a person appointed by the Board of County Commissioners of Hennepin County, who shall serve at its pleasure, and a person appointed by the city council of the city of Minneapolis, who shall serve at its pleasure.

The MBC's mission is to provide effective and efficient services to operate, maintain and preserve the historic landmark City Hall and Courthouse building, and ensure a safe and functional environment for government employees, citizens and elected officials.

Moreover, the MBC is working diligently to reintroduce history into this turn-of-the-20th-century structure, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, through free public tours, events, and exhibits celebrating its architectural significance.
