Accredited by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums, the society relies on about 350 staff members and more than 500 volunteers. The 125-acre Detroit Zoo is home to over 2,000 animals and features major exhibits such as the National Amphibian Conservation Center, Polk Penguin Conservation Center, Deveraux Tiger Forest, Great Apes of Harambee and Arctic Ring of Life. The Belle Isle Nature Center occupies six acres on Belle Isle State Park and provides educational and environmental experiences for visitors, with free admission. In 2026, the Detroit Zoo announced the Fred and Barbara Erb Discovery Trails, a seven-acre expansion designed to enhance guest experiences with new animals, interactive experiences and play areas, scheduled to open in summer 2026.
