The Competitive Enterprise Institute is a non-profit public policy organization focused on limiting government, promoting free markets, and protecting individual liberty. Its work combines scholarly research with policy advocacy; researchers publish studies and CEI then designs media campaigns to present policy proposals to policymakers, opinion leaders, and grassroots groups. The organization also forms coalitions and, when appropriate, engages in judicial action to challenge statutes, regulatory actions, and to compel disclosure of public information. 

Founded in 1984 and based in Washington, D.C., CEI operates as a think tank in the energy, environment, business and finance, technology, telecommunications, and food and drug regulation spheres. Its target audience includes policymakers, influential media figures, and grassroots activists, and it collaborates with allied organizations to advance specific issues at state, national, and international levels. A recent development in its activity includes launching a policy paper series called Fast Track in 2024.
