The YWCA of Bethlehem has been serving the community since its inception in 1927. Its diverse history includes teaching English to immigrants in the 1930s, holding domestic science classes and arts and craft to women during the Great Depression, and sponsoring voter registration drives and demonstrations on the use of the voting machines in the 1940s. In 1962 the YWCA of Bethlehem opened Bethlehem’s first nursery school, and 22 years later in 1984 the organization opened Northampton County’s first adult day services center. Today, the YWCA of Bethlehem offers programs for youth, women and families. TechGYRLS is an after-school program that provides elementary and middle school girls with a hands-on exploration of graphic arts, animation, web design and robotics. The LPGA-USGA Girls Golf of the Lehigh Valley and Southern Lehigh Valley teaches girls aged 7-17 the game of golf. The Neighbor to Neighbor program provides mammography education to uninsured or underinsured women living in local housing unit locations. The Racial Justice Initiative, which includes Study Circles, Reading Circles, Youth Reading Circles, and the Racial Justice Education program, promotes an open dialogue within the community about race. All programs directly relate to the YWCA of Bethlehem’s mission to eliminate racism, empower women and promote peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all.
