Women Make Movies is a nonprofit organization based in New York City that was founded in 1972 to address the underrepresentation and misrepresentation of women in the media industry. The group emphasizes multicultural and multiracial perspectives as it supports the production, promotion, distribution, and exhibition of independent films and videotapes by and about women. Operating in the film and sound recording sector, it provides services to both makers and users of film and video programs. Its work centers on promoting feminist media through two main programs: an internationally recognized Distribution Service and a Production Assistance Program that supports project development, with a special emphasis on work by women of color. In 2026, the organization announced that productions from its Production Assistance Program would be featured at Sheffield DocFest, including selections in the MeetMarket.
