The William James Association's Prison Arts Project contracts with professional artists across visual, literary, and performing disciplines to offer long-term arts experiences for incarcerated men and women in California and federal prisons. It also administers the Community Youth Arts Project, bringing artists to work with disenfranchised and at-risk youth in alternative schools and detention facilities in and around Santa Cruz. A related initiative, the Poetic Justice Project, develops original theatre that explores themes of crime, punishment, and redemption through collaboration with formerly incarcerated writers, artists, musicians, and actors.
