The Washington Afro American Newspaper, based in Baltimore, Maryland, is the oldest African American family-owned news media company with more than a century of continuous publishing. It has long served as a voice for the Black community, reporting on local, national, and international events that might otherwise be underrepresented. The publication has compiled a large archive—more than a million articles—covering aspects of the African American experience in business, civil rights, education, health, law, and sports. Historically, the AFRO issued 13 editions, including Baltimore, Washington, Richmond, New Jersey, and Philadelphia, with six national papers covering areas such as North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, and Georgia. In recent years, the organization has pursued digital initiatives, such as launching a Digital Billboard Network, and has engaged in partnerships to support community-focused programs. In 2022, leadership changes occurred, including Alexis Taylor taking on the role of news editor after Dorothy Boulware stepped back.
