The University of Maine System (UMS) is a public higher education system based in Bangor, Maine, established in 1968. It brings together the University of Maine, its regional campus the University of Maine at Machias, the University of Maine at Augusta, Farmington, Fort Kent, Presque Isle, the University of Southern Maine, and the University of Maine School of Law, as well as the University of Maine Graduate and Professional Center. The system pursues a tripartite mission of education, research, and service, serving more than 30,000 students annually with a workforce of thousands of faculty and staff. Its programs are designed to support Maine residents by expanding online education, increasing opportunities for high school students to earn college credit, growing graduate enrollment, and advancing adult degree completion. The system notes that UMaine's in-state tuition and fees are the lowest among New England flagship universities, and about 30% of Maine undergraduates attend Maine public universities without paying tuition and fees out-of-pocket. In 2026 the system launched a System-wide minor in tourism, hospitality, and outdoor recreation to broaden career pathways.
