The Union for the Mediterranean is an intergovernmental organization that brings together 43 countries to foster regional cooperation and dialogue through targeted projects and initiatives addressing inclusive and sustainable development, stability, and integration in the Euro-Mediterranean area. Established as a direct continuation of the Barcelona Process, its 2008 launch reflected member states' shared political commitment to strengthening the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership. It is based in Barcelona, in the Catalonia region of Spain, and operates within the international affairs sector as a mid-sized organization. In January 2026, the UfM, together with the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation and with the support of GNE Finance, launched a Capacity-Building Programme designed to equip public authorities from selected Southern and Eastern Mediterranean countries with the skills and knowledge needed to develop bankable sustainable urban projects. This recent initiative illustrates the organization’s focus on practical, capacity-building activities that advance sustainable urban development across the region. The UfM's work centers on facilitating cooperation and development within the Euro-Mediterranean area.
