The UCSF Institute for Global Health Sciences is a mid-sized, interdisciplinary educational, service and research entity within the University of California, San Francisco, focused on improving health and reducing the burden of disease among vulnerable populations worldwide. It integrates expertise across health, social and biological sciences to train the next generation of global health leaders and develop solutions to current health challenges. Founded in 2003 as Global Health Sciences by Haile Debas, the unit adopted its current name in 2017 and is based in San Francisco, California. The institute conducts work across training, research, public health practice, and policy development, addressing conditions such as malaria, HIV, tuberculosis, and maternal and newborn health, with activities both in California and internationally. It partners with academic centers, international organizations, ministries of health and private sector partners to advance health worldwide and strengthen health systems.
