It covers about 29.5 square miles (76.4 km2), with 29.4 square miles of land, and employs between 51 and 200 people. The town contains the villages of Sloan and half of Depew, as well as the census-designated place of Cheektowaga, and is home to the Buffalo Niagara International Airport. It originated as a rural farming area and underwent significant post-World War II development; it was formed from the town of Amherst in 1839 and reduced to its present boundaries with the creation of West Seneca in 1851. The town includes educational and commercial facilities such as Villa Maria College, Empire State College, and the Walden Galleria, and has a strong blue-collar presence with a large Polish-American community.
