Founded in 2002, it is headquartered in a renovated National Guard Armory and centers on Cold War era collections, serving researchers, scholars, artists, students, and the public. It operates as a cultural laboratory that combines archival material with contemporary artists, filmmakers, musicians, scholars, and other creators to present exhibitions and multidisciplinary programming. Since moving to the Armory in 2017, it has functioned as an open public space for artistic and community engagement. In 2026, the museum announced expansion plans to establish a new research institute and interactive storage facility in Hawthorne, California.
