The Progressive Magazine operates as a nonprofit educational publication in the book and periodical publishing space, focused on peace, social justice, and the common good. Its content seeks to elevate dissenting and historically underrepresented voices to support grassroots progressive politics, civil liberties, human rights, and environmental stewardship. Based in Madison, Wisconsin, the organization has a long history dating back to its first issue in 1909 and now functions under The Progressive, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that also runs related initiatives such as the Public School Shakedown and the Progressive Media Project. The magazine positions itself within the broader landscape of political and social commentary, distinguishing itself through a commitment to nonviolence and freedom of speech while challenging militarism and concentrated corporate power. A recent development involves a collaboration with Project Censored, signaling ongoing engagement with media literacy and critical analysis in its journalism and educational work.
