The Albert Schweitzer Fellowship develops health leaders who have the dedication, vision, and skillset to improve health outcomes in communities across the US. Schweitzer Fellows work in partnership with communities to identify unmet needs and opportunities and develop sustainable solutions to address them. Fellows are part of interdisciplinary cohorts and experience leadership training, which sparks the relationships and imagination they need to make impact throughout their careers.  

Each year, about 250 Fellows across the US, in partnership with ~53 academic institutions, go through the program. Once the Fellowship year is complete, Fellows become Schweitzer Fellows for Life, joining a network of 4000+ alumni, what we call Fellows for Life. 

The Schweitzer Fellowship launched in 1940, first connecting US medical students with the Schweitzer Hospital in Lambaréné, Gabon. Now, the Fellowship is US-based, and is organized around ten sites: Alabama, Chicago, Columbus-Athens, Detroit, Houston-Galveston, New Hampshire/Vermont, New Orleans, North Carolina, San Francisco/Bay Area and Tulsa, Oklahoma.
