The Montpelier Foundation is a history-focused nonprofit based in Orange, Virginia, overseeing Montpelier, a 2,650-acre estate that serves as a memorial to the Madison family and the enslaved community, as well as a museum of American history and a center for constitutional education. It presents the legacy of James Madison's idea that government should be by the people through archaeology, architectural restoration, public programming, and long-running research. Its award-winning exhibition The Mere Distinction of Colour examines race and racism in American history and includes reconstructed slave dwellings. The foundation seeks to illuminate the lives of the Madisons and those whom they enslaved.

 The estate has historical layers beyond the Madison era, including connections to the duPont family, as well as a segregated Train Depot, a Civil War encampment, and a freedman's cabin. In 2025, the foundation partnered with Visitorangevirginia to conduct oral history interviews with community members who remember the site during its time as a bustling hub under the duPont family.
