Johns Hopkins University is America’s first research university, founded in 1876 to pursue large ideas and share findings that can improve lives. It enrolls more than 24,000 students across nine academic divisions, offering over 260 programs that span the arts and humanities, the social and natural sciences, engineering, international studies, education, business, and the health professions. The university is named for 19th‑century Maryland philanthropist Johns Hopkins, whose philanthropy supported public health and education in the region. Based in Baltimore, Maryland, Hopkins operates four campuses in Baltimore, one in Washington, D.C., one in Montgomery County, and maintains facilities throughout the Baltimore–Washington region as well as in China and Italy. In June 2026 it launched Open School Ranking, a public-data and AI-assisted tool designed to evaluate colleges by return on investment and financial stability.
