The George and Carol Olmsted Foundation operates as a private organization that develops military leadership through the Olmsted Scholar Program. Based in Falls Church, Virginia, it has conducted this work since 1959. The Olmsted Experience identifies high-performing junior officers and aims to broaden their global understanding and strategic view of international relations. 

Over a three-year program, participants develop proficiency in a foreign language, pursue privately funded graduate study abroad, and continue to serve on active duty while gaining exposure to diverse perspectives. Olmsted Scholars have attained senior leadership roles across the armed forces, including at the Combatant Command level, and are selected for such positions at higher rates than peers in comparable paths.
