The Blum Center for Developing Economies is UC Berkeley’s interdisciplinary hub focused on global poverty and inequality. Based in Berkeley, California, it brings together students, researchers, and scholars to tackle major development challenges through cross-disciplinary problem solving. Since its founding in 2006, the center has pursued a mission to train people, source and support innovations, and develop scalable solutions. It operates within the higher education sector, leveraging UC Berkeley’s resources to address issues in energy, health, financial services, food, water, and sanitation.

Its six initiatives span a range of activities, from a student-centered ideas competition and an undergraduate minor in Global Poverty and Practice to a doctoral emphasis in Development Engineering, a professional Master of Development Engineering, multidisciplinary IdeaLabs, and a global Development Impact Lab established with USAID. Its work serves UC Berkeley students and researchers, as well as partner organizations, by training, coordinating innovations, and supporting scalable, evidence-based solutions to poverty and inequality.
