The BASIC Fund is a privately funded, non-sectarian nonprofit based in Oakland that provides scholarships to PreK–8 students to attend the private school of their choice. Scholarships are awarded on a sliding scale up to $2,750 per student per year, based on household income and family size, with no merit component. Once a family qualifies, all siblings are eligible, and the award covers through the eighth grade; the fund also links families to additional resources such as tutoring, mentoring, after-school programs, and summer school through local partners. The program serves the San Francisco Bay Area, addressing the barriers faced by low-income children in education due to geographic constraints and resource gaps. It currently supports more than 3,500 students across 249 private schools annually, and has helped more than 26,000 students since its founding in 1998. The BASIC Fund is the largest non-sectarian scholarship organization in the United States and partners with the Children's Scholarship Fund.
