St. Mary\'s County Metropolitan Commission (MetCom) is the public water and sewer utility based in California, in St. Mary\'s County, Maryland. It delivers clean drinking water and treats wastewater for roughly 16,000 homes and 850 commercial establishments, with service areas guided by county growth plans and input from the Health Department on septic failures to prevent health hazards. MetCom is an independent, quasi-governmental, not-for-profit entity created by the state legislature in 1957 and operating under Section 113 of the St. Mary\'s County Code, not a county department and funded entirely by ratepayers. It maintains an extensive infrastructure, including more than 300 miles of water mains, about 200 miles of sanitary sewer lines, 70 wells, 39 ground-based storage tanks, 16 water towers, 52 water pumping stations, 61 wastewater pumping stations, and five wastewater treatment plants.
