The South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) is a large public health research organization based in Cape Town, Western Cape. Established in 1969, it conducts basic laboratory investigations, clinical research, and public health studies to address South Africa's leading causes of mortality, including tuberculosis, HIV, chronic diseases, alcohol and drug abuse, and women's health. Its mission is to improve the nation's health and quality of life by promoting and conducting relevant and responsive health research. Positioned within the research services industry, SAMRC serves as a national resource for evidence generation and knowledge transfer to health practitioners, policymakers, and researchers. It pursues partnerships and collaborations, such as with AQUITY Innovations on a DR-TB outcomes-based financing pilot and with UNIVEN for health sciences initiatives, while also participating in forums and events such as World Intellectual Property Day to explore intersections of science, policy, and innovation.
