Shimer College is a small liberal arts college located in Chicago, Illinois, operating within the higher education sector. With enrollments under 200 students and class sizes capped at about a dozen, it pursues a rigorous curriculum built entirely on primary sources. The institution had a historical affiliation with the University of Chicago before separating to focus on its primary-source based approach. Its urban setting treats the city as its campus, located on Chicago’s near South Side with ready access to public transit, Lake Michigan, and a wealth of cultural and archival resources.

It operates as a self-governing, inclusive community centered on shared accountability and personal responsibility, where every voice can be heard. Shimer was founded in 1852 and, after moving from a Mt. Carroll campus in the 1970s, established its base in the Chicago area.
