Shelter House, Iowa City is a nonprofit organization in the civic and social sector that provides housing and supportive services to people experiencing homelessness. It was founded in 1983 by the Consultation of Religious Communities, in collaboration with the City of Iowa City, and began with a north-side home offering 29 sleeping spaces for men, women, and children. Today the organization runs programs across emergency shelter, stabilization, and long-term interventions in housing, employment, and mental health recovery, serving hundreds of men, women, and children each year. Its work aims to keep children in school, help adults return to work, assist people with disabilities and elderly to access benefits and health care, and move families into their own homes.
