Self Enhancement, Inc. is a Portland-based nonprofit founded in 1981 by Tony Hopson, Sr. It began as a one-week summer basketball camp aimed at offering African American teens in North Portland a constructive alternative. By 1989, the program had expanded to a year-round model providing academic support and wraparound services for African American students and their families. In 1997, SEI opened the Center for Self Enhancement, which serves as the organization’s hub and a safe space, supporting a broad continuum of youth and family services. The organization serves primarily African Americans and others living in poverty or seeking culturally responsive services, and it functions as a comprehensive resource for education and social services for thousands of youth, families, and adults each year, making it one of the city’s leading multi-service organizations. In February 2026, SEI hosted the Culture + Commerce Market to celebrate and invest in local businesses, illustrating its ongoing commitment to community engagement.
