Seattle Teacher Residency is a higher education program established in 2012 through a collaboration involving the University of Washington, the Seattle Education Association, and Seattle Public Schools. Based in Seattle, Washington, it seeks to recruit and prepare elementary and special education teachers who will work with students furthest from educational justice, particularly in Title I schools. The program combines integrated coursework with a year-long mentored practicum to earn a Master of Teaching from the UW College of Education. Upon graduation, fellows receive priority in securing teaching positions within Seattle elementary or special education settings and commit to a five-year teaching obligation, supported by ongoing STR participation. The program emphasizes recruiting from the communities it serves, aiming to increase the district's proportion of BIPOC educators and to influence students' educational experiences.
