SCARCE is an environmental services nonprofit focused on education to preserve natural resources and support sustainable communities in Illinois. It delivers programs for students from kindergarten through college, along with teacher trainings, graduate-credit workshops, and environmental certifications for nonprofits and businesses. The organization originated in 1990 when founder Kay McKeen began teaching about recycling and other environmental issues, and in 1991 launched Book Rescue to move gently used books out of storage and away from landfills. Based in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, SCARCE relies on a small core staff and a broad network of volunteers to run community events and partnerships across DuPage County that promote recycling and responsible resource use. Its work serves schools, educators, students, nonprofits, and local governments, addressing issues such as surplus educational materials and public education on environmental stewardship. In 2025, SCARCE partnered with the City of West Chicago to launch a used cooking oil recycling program, illustrating ongoing collaboration with communities on practical sustainability initiatives.
