The San Francisco Silent Film Festival is a nonprofit organization based in San Francisco, California, dedicated to educating the public about silent cinema as both an art form and a historically significant record. The festival programs events throughout the year that showcase rare and classic silent films, frequently presented in restored or preserved formats with live musical accompaniment, aligning with the concept of “live cinema.” Since its establishment in 1996, the organization has become a recognized destination for filmmakers, scholars, and film enthusiasts, presenting dozens of titles accompanied by renowned composers and musicians. In addition to screenings, SFSFF has contributed to the field by publishing a large collection of original essays, supporting preservation efforts, and funding initiatives that aid emerging archivists. A recent collaboration noted in local media involves a partnership with the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art to present the Frank Buxton Silent Film Festival, expanding the reach of silent-era programming beyond its home base.
