The S. D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation envisions a productive, vibrant, and sustainable California that is a model of success and a source of innovation, and supports efforts to achieve this mission through two specific program areas. The Foundation’s Education Program focuses on helping young people develop the knowledge, skills, and character to explore and understand the world around them, and to grow into caring, informed, and productive adults. The Foundation’s Environment Program concentrates on the management, stewardship, and conservation of the state’s natural resources by supporting organizations and partnerships that inform, demonstrate, implement, and advocate for improvements in water management and land stewardship. An Effectiveness team supports grantmaking in both programs, with a special emphasis on evaluation and learning as well as strengthening the capacity of nonprofit organizations.
 
California faces many critical challenges requiring resources and creative solutions today, and the Foundation Board of Directors is investing all of its assets by 2020.
 
The Foundation concludes operations on December 31, 2020 and is no longer accepting new grant requests.
 
To preserve its knowledge, the Foundation is keeping the culminating version of its website online for a period of time.
