The Roanoke Symphony Orchestra is a professional ensemble based in Roanoke, Virginia, delivering orchestral and choral performances to western Virginia. It is the largest professional orchestra in Virginia west of Richmond and pursues programming that blends traditional repertoire with innovative approaches to educate and entertain diverse audiences. The organization traces its origins to 1953, when Gibson Morrisey and a small group of music enthusiasts founded the ensemble, with Morrisey leading until 1975, followed by several conductors, and David Stewart Wiley at the helm since 1996. The Roanoke Symphony Orchestra operates StudioRSO, its education division, which serves more than 8,500 students annually and offers three youth ensembles, after-school string classes, educational concerts, and in-school programming, culminating in a summer music institute for ages 9-18. In 2022, the organization expanded its activities with the appointment of David Webb as Music Director and Conductor of the Roanoke Youth Symphony Orchestra, and a partnership with Anderson Music Therapy to support memory-care programs.
