Registers of Scotland is a government department in Scotland responsible for maintaining public registers of land, property, and other legal documents. Its roots go back to seventeenth-century Edinburgh with the General Register of Sasines, the world's oldest national land register. Today the organisation oversees 23 public registers, including the Land Register of Scotland, the Crofting Register, the Scottish Landlord Register, and the Register of Community Interests in Land, under the leadership of the Keeper of the Registers of Scotland accountable to the Scottish Parliament. It is led by the Keeper of the Registers of Scotland and operates as a non-ministerial department of the Scottish government with offices in Glasgow and Edinburgh. The organisation employs around a thousand staff who work across its Glasgow and Edinburgh sites to maintain the registers and provide access to public records. In 2022 it launched a digital solution to improve safekeeping and support digital signatures.
