The Reed College Reactor Facility in Portland, Oregon, is a TRIGA Mark I reactor established in 1968 to support research and education in the region. It operates in a 25-foot-deep tank with fuel enriched to 20 percent U-235 and is surrounded by a graphite ring to minimize neutron leakage, allowing operation up to a license ceiling of 250 kW to provide a defined neutron flux for experiments. The facility is primarily used for instruction, research, and analysis, with an emphasis on trace-element studies. Undergraduate students licensed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission run the reactor, enabling them to conduct their own research or perform irradiations for educational organizations, private research groups, and industrial applications. A one-year, non-credit seminar prepares participants for the licensing examination, and students and faculty from other institutions may attend.
