QEWC is a public shareholding company established in 1990 under Qatar's Commercial Companies Law to own, operate, and manage power generation and seawater desalination facilities, selling the products to the national utility under agreed terms. It owns and operates a portfolio of power plants and desalination stations that meet the country's electricity and water needs, with government ownership around 43% and the remainder held by institutions and private individuals. QEWC expanded capacity through projects such as RAF B1 and RAF B2, which added substantial power output and water production, and RAF A1 increasing water capacity. It also raised its stake in Ras Laffan Power Company to 80%, and the facility now provides 750 MW of power and 45 MIGD of water. Plans to add a 500 MW peak power unit at Ras Abu Fontas indicate ongoing growth in its regional footprint.
