Its early focus on preventing mother-to-child transmission has expanded to lead studies across HIV prevention, treatment and care, encompassing both medical and social research. The unit is based in Soweto at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital and is directed by Professors Glenda Gray and James McIntyre. As a unit of the University of the Witwatersrand, PHRU conducts a broad program of HIV research aimed at advancing prevention, treatment and care, including social dimensions of the epidemic.
