The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) is a major regional security body gathering 57 participating States across a vast geographic span from Vancouver to Vladivostok. Its origins lie in the early 1970s Conference on Security and Co-operation in Europe, which served as a forum for East–West dialogue during the Cold War and addressed post-Soviet security challenges. Today, OSCE operates through its institutions and 16 field operations to pursue a broad agenda of security and stability. Its work includes election monitoring, human rights protection, legislative reform, rule of law and media freedom, and efforts to counter human trafficking, terrorism, and illicit small arms flows. Headquartered in Vienna, Austria, it is a large intergovernmental organization whose work centers on multilateral dialogue and governance-related initiatives.
