Founded in 2002 and based in Brooklyn, New York, NY Writers Coalition is a community writing organization that ranks among the larger entities in its field in the United States. It offers free creative writing workshops across New York City for groups that have historically lacked a voice, including at-risk and disconnected youth, people who are homeless or formerly homeless, those who have been incarcerated, veterans, individuals with disabilities, cancer patients and other major illnesses, immigrants, and seniors. The organization has earned recognition from foundations such as the Union Square Awards and the Petra Foundation. In 2020 it launched the Black Writers Program to broaden its offerings. Its participants and their work have been featured by The New York Times Blog, WNYC's Brian Lehrer Show, The Huffington Post and NY1 Noticias.
