The Musée d'Orsay is a Paris-based cultural institution focused on Western art from 1848 to 1914, spanning movements such as realism, impressionism, symbolism, fauvism, and Art Nouveau. Its collections include painting, sculpture, decorative arts, and photography, with works by Courbet, Manet, Monet, Renoir, Cézanne, Van Gogh, and Gauguin. Opened in 1986 in a former railway station on the left bank of the Seine, the museum pursues a multidisciplinary presentation philosophy, refreshing its galleries and supporting a mix of exhibitions, talks, performances, and digital programming. Based in Paris, Île-de-France, the institution employs several hundred staff and serves a broad audience of art lovers, scholars, and general visitors. In 2026, it opened a permanent room dedicated to works looted by the Nazis, marking an expansion of its interpretive offerings and collection context.
