mothers2mothers (m2m) is a nonprofit organization operating across seven African countries, focused on empowering women to lead health initiatives in their communities. The program trains and remunerates Mentor Mothers—African women living with HIV—as community health workers who deliver integrated primary health care to families. This approach targets HIV and related health challenges, including tuberculosis, cervical cancer, diabetes, and malaria, by delivering care that mirrors the needs of families. The organization is based in Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa, and has evolved since its founding in 2001 through collaboration with governments, multilaterals, and implementing partners to inform policy and strengthen health systems. Since inception, m2m has created jobs for more than 12,000 women living with HIV and reached over 17 million people with essential health services and education, helping keep alive more than 3 million at-risk mothers and infants; in 2023 it reported a 0% mother-to-child transmission rate among enrolled clients.
