The Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey is a small private graduate school based in Monterey, California, offering master's programs aimed at addressing global challenges such as environmental protection, sustainable development, social enterprises, peace and security, and cross-cultural understanding. A central focus is language and intercultural communication, with nine languages offered and a diverse student body representing more than 40 countries. The institute combines scholarly instruction with practical experience, supported by an 8:1 student-faculty ratio that allows close interaction with faculty. Students participate in practica, internships, or professional development programs, including options to study abroad or gain U.S. experience. Outcomes indicate strong employment placement, with a majority of graduates working in their field within six months and numerous alumni applying language skills professionally in global settings. Scholarships for merit and summer language study are available to both U.S. and international students, and recent news notes discussions about a potential acquisition of the MIIS campus by Soka University of America.
