The Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District is a public utility agency in Missouri formed in 1954 after voters approved the Plan of the District, with operations beginning in 1956. It stands as the only special district in Missouri created under a provision of the State Constitution, and it is responsible for intercepting, collecting, and treating wastewater as well as managing stormwater. Its service area covers 525 square miles, including all of St. Louis City and about 90 percent of St. Louis County, serving roughly 1.3 million people and more than 425,000 accounts. MSD operates seven wastewater treatment facilities with an average daily treatment of 370 million gallons and maintains 9,790 miles of sewers whose ages range from less than a year to 150 years. In 2022, MSD Project Clear launched a clean water initiative aimed at improving water quality across the St. Louis area.
