The MPL Association is an international trade association in the insurance field that represents medical professional liability insurers, risk retention groups, captives, trusts, and related entities focused on delivering quality healthcare. Its members insure around 2.5 million healthcare professionals and more than 3,000 hospitals and 50,000 medical facilities and group practices worldwide. The organization is based in Rockville, Maryland. Its origins trace back to the 1970s when physician-owned liability carriers formed in response to a shrinking market, culminating in the 1977 creation of the Physician Insurers Association of America. In 2017, the association adopted its current name to reflect changes in the MPL landscape and member needs. In 2026, MPL Association announced a collaboration with the I-PASS Institute to promote patient safety and reduce claims through joint initiatives.
