MBI, a small nonprofit biotechnology research organization, is based in Lansing, Michigan. It functions as a mission-driven accelerator that derisks early-stage biotechnologies through a milestone-based, stage-gated development process. The organization brings together science, engineering, operations and business expertise with flexible infrastructure to move technologies from the laboratory to pilot-scale development. It engages with universities, corporations and research institutions, working with partners such as Michigan State University, Cargill, DuPont, Genomatica, Novozymes, NatureWorks, Verdezyne and the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center. Technologies developed at MBI are recognized and trusted worldwide, as illustrated by the PLA polymer co-developed with Michigan State University and Cargill for renewable, biodegradable containers and cutlery. MBI is affiliated with Michigan State University and is a wholly owned subsidiary of the MSU Foundation.
