Madigan Army Medical Center is a United States Army hospital system located on Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Tacoma, Washington, with a network of facilities in Washington and California. The center serves more than 100,000 active duty service members, their families and retirees, offering general medical and surgical care, primary care, a 24-hour emergency department, specialty clinics, and behavioral health and wellness services. Opened in 1944 to treat war-wounded patients, Madigan has evolved into a tertiary care medical center and is one of two Level II trauma centers in Army Medicine; it participates in the Tacoma Trauma Trust to provide care for non-beneficiary trauma victims beyond JBLM. Madigan maintains about 220 inpatient beds, expandable to more than 300 during emergencies, and its outpatient medical mall handles nearly one million visits annually, with more than 45 surgeries performed and about 4,000 prescriptions filled. Madigan supports Graduate Medical and Nursing Education programs, operates the Andersen Simulation Center—the first DoD-accredited educational institution by the American College of Surgeons—and conducts clinical research across the full spectrum of trials; it is part of Regional Health Command - Pacific and has been recognized as one of the most wired hospitals and for environmentally friendly practices.
