It holds the distinction of being the oldest continuously operating Lutheran high school in the United States, tracing its lineage to Northwestern Preparatory School, which began in 1865 as the prep department of Northwestern College and became a separate entity in 1974. In 1995, Northwestern Prep merged with Martin Luther Prep to form Luther Prep. The school is owned and operated by the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS), and its mission is to prepare and encourage students for full-time ministry within the WELS.

The student body and their families are the school's primary audience, seeking a Lutheran education that leads toward ministry within the WELS. As part of the WELS education system, Luther Prep sits within a network of Lutheran secondary schools overseen by the Synod.
