Founded in 1923, the Los Angeles County Fire Department is a public-safety organization based in Los Angeles County, California. It operates as one of the world's largest emergency service agencies, with about 900 responders on duty daily to provide fire protection, life safety, and environmental protection to more than four million residents and businesses across a 2,296-square-mile county. Its Urban Search and Rescue Team participates in international missions as part of California Task Force 2, and locally serves across 58 cities and unincorporated areas. Behind the scenes, the department is supported by more than 800 professionals who help carry out its mission. The department maintains a leadership role in firefighting practice by offering specialized training in Urban Search and Rescue, Emergency Medical Services, Hazardous Materials, Air Operations, and Homeland Security. Recent county developments include the December 2025 launch of a centralized, independent reporting platform as part of ongoing governance actions.
