LeMoyne-Owen College is a mid-sized higher education institution in Memphis, Tennessee. Its origins trace back to 1862 when it began as Lincoln Chapel, a school established for freedmen by the American Missionary Association, later evolving into a junior college in 1924 and a four-year college in 1930. Since 1914, the campus has been located on Walker Avenue, with Steele Hall marking the college's early development. Martin Luther King Jr. visited the campus in March 1957. Recent years have seen LeMoyne-Owen College pursue initiatives to strengthen its programs and community engagement, including the 2025 launch of the Lowery Communication Center to advance media education and a partnership with OUTMemphis. In 2024, the college was recognized as a Fulbright HBCU Institutional Leader, reflecting its leadership within historically Black colleges and universities. In 2026, the college announced the departure of its vice president of institutional advancement.
