The Lawrence History Center is a nonprofit research organization based in Lawrence, Massachusetts, founded in 1978 originally as the Immigrant City Archives. It collects, preserves, and provides access to materials that document the city’s history and its diverse communities, including extensive Essex Company records that chart the city’s development dating back to the mid-19th century. Its holdings include tens of thousands of photographs and glass plate negatives, hundreds of oral histories, and a variety of municipal, organizational, church, business, and family records, all used to support exhibits, educational programs, symposia, and research services. Located in the former Essex Company complex, the center engages the community by presenting both physical and online exhibitions and by fostering understanding of how the built environment and the people of Lawrence have interacted over time.
