La Plata County Humane Society is a Durango-based non-profit organization established in 1971 as a 501(c)(3) animal shelter. It provides shelter for homeless animals, rescues distressed animals, and assists in cruelty investigations, while also working to place animals in homes and promote humane education. Since 2000, the organization has included a veterinarian on staff to ensure health checks, spaying or neutering, initial vaccinations, microchipping, and high-quality care before adoption, and it is governed by nine elected board members. Its Thrift Store, opened in 1990, funds the shelter by selling donated, gently-used goods and accepting donations daily through a drive-through donation center. Proceeds support the organization's programs and allow donations to other local nonprofits, such as VOA and community groups. In addition to adoption services and humane education, the society has pursued partnerships and leadership transitions, including appointing an interim executive director in 2023.
