Kress Corporation designs and manufactures large, specialized mobile equipment for bulk material handling in mining and steel production contexts. Founded in October 1965 by Edward S. Kress, the company quickly demonstrated its capability with a slag pot carrier delivered to the Edward C. Levy Company to manage slag pots from Great Lakes 300-ton BOF furnaces. The carrier proved successful and generated early follow-on orders for additional units. The firm's next product was a slab carrier developed for Ford Motor Company's steel plant, capable of lifting and transporting 100 tons of slabs and coils. In 1971, Kress expanded into coal handling with its first coal hauler, a bottom-dump design built for Captain Mine of Southwestern Illinois Coal Corporation. Based in Brimfield, Illinois, the company remains focused on the mining equipment sector, delivering specialized machines for bulk material handling in heavy industry.
